Plaque commemorating Don Gile of San Mateo High School being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on June 4, 2002. Plaque includes image of Gile and a brief biography: "Don Gile, a San Mateo High School grad who spent a year at the College of San Mateo, became one of the greatest catchers ever produced in San Mateo County. His prodigious slugging skills took him all the way to the major leagues for four seasons with the Boston Red Sox from 1959 to 1962. At the University of Arizona, he helped to lead his team to the College World Series in his junior and senior seasons. In his last big-league at-bat, he powered a homer against the Senators." |
