Description |
American Flag from Belmont School, May 30, 1899. Strips of red and white cotton linen fabric that have been sewn together to create a striped pattern with red stripes on top and bottom edges. Blue linen square sewn in upper left corner with 45 white stars sewn onto each side. Stars are arranged in 6 rows and the 1st, 3rd and 5th rows are indented slightly more. Left edge has a metal grommet in each corner and the linen has been reinforced/is a heavier weight. On back of that edge is handwriting that reads, "Belmont School / May 30, '99 Hopkins / 1416-1" in black ink. Right side is hemmed. Looks to be machine sewn. |

"The 45-Star Flag: This Flag became the Official United States Flag on July 4th, 1896. A star was added for the admission of Utah on January 4th, 1896, and was to last for 12 years. The Presidents to serve under this flag were Grover Cleveland (1893-1897), William McKinley (1897-1901),and Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)."
