Dowa Ladies' Hat, c. 1950-1969 |
Object Name |
Hat, Pillbox |
Description |
Dowa Ladies' Hat, c. 1950-1969. Cream-colored pillbox-style hat, with a central dome molded to the wearer's head and a narrow donut-like ring around it. Material is made out of lengths of stiff ribbon, one side with almost glossy thread stripes and the other side plain. Ribbon has been woven in a way that, on the inside, looks like a regular pattern but on the outside looks intentionally random. Outer "donut" is covered by a layer of very simple netting. Inside, the hat is lined with more netting in a tighter weave, has a simple ribbon hat band, an off-white tag reading "Dowa / MADE EXPRESSLY FOR / The Emporium," and a smaller tag reading "22 1/2." |

Notes |
"The Emporium was a mid-line department store chain headquartered in San Francisco, California, which operated for 99 years—from 1896 to 1995. The flagship location on San Francisco's Market Street was a destination shopping location for decades, and several branch stores operated in the various suburbs of the Bay Area. The Emporium and its sister department store chains were acquired by Federated Department Stores in 1995, and many converted to Macy's locations." The location in the San Bruno Tanforan Mall was the last Emporium store to close. It converted to a Target store in 1996. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Emporium_(San_Francisco) and https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Target-Buys-Tanforan-Emporium-San-Bruno-mall-2991526.php 09/12/2018] Little information on the Dowa brand could be found, but judging by vintage listings it manufactured the majority of its hats in the 1950s and 1960s. |
