Hospital Detail, 1917. Pencil on off-white paper cartoon sketch of two male figures. The first is on the left, on one knee, and is wearing a uniform with tall boots and smoking a long cigarette. Behind his left leg is a bucket, bottle, and small glass. He holds a gigantic half-full syringe. The other is bald and muscular, standing on the right, and wearing only a fringed cloth tied around his hips. The syringe needle is entering his arm. Above the point of contact is a wispy bubble with a star inside. On the top left of the page is written ""Hospital Detail" / Camp Lewis / Nov - 10 - 1917 -". |

"Burlingame resident Alvin Page Colby documented his experience serving in WWI with comic sketches... Alvin Page Colby, a resident of Burlingame, made dozens of drawings while training at Fort Lewis in Washington and later serving in France as a cook in the 91st "Wild West" Division." They gave each man a smallpox vaccination, typhoid inoculation and paratyphoid inoculation. |
