Description |
Oriental Rug, pre-1961. Multicolored cashmere wool with a geometric design that incorporates floral and animal motifs. The center medallion has a blue cross that contains a red flower with a green dot at center. The interior of the outer edge, which is brown, has alternating white anchor shapes and red flowers with blue centers. Moving outward, the next section of the design has a yellow ground with a floral motif of red, pink, white, and blue flowers with green vines interspersed with brown and tan single leaves (oak leaf?). This has a thin brown, red, blue, and white border. The outer section of the medallion has a dark blue ground with alternating animal and floral shapes in tan, blue, red, pink, green, gold, and white. This section also has a thin border of red, white, and brown with an additional border of red serpentine outline on a brown ground. On either side of the central medallion are two vertical medallions with a gold center and a blue outline with red serpentine fringe and a floral motif in the center that is red, blue, white, and green. Outside of these in a smaller additional vertical dark blue medallion is a yellow flower pointing to the right and left sides respectively. It also has a similar serpentine border. The medallions are placed within light gray or tan ground with a multiple color floral and vine motif. The design described thus far appears within a rectangular rose-colored border with a serpentine gold design interspersed with brown and red circular designs. Inside the rose border, brown and red animal(?) motifs appear at the corners on blue ground. These have a gold border with alternating red diamonds and green hearts on the interior side. Between this border and the outer blue serpentine border of the medallion is a red ground with blue, pink, green, gold, white, and brown floral motifs. The outer rectangular border consists of a wide strip of blue flanked by smaller lines of rose all heavily decorated. On the dark blue outer border is an ornate red serpentine inner border interspersed with blue, red, white, green, and gold floral motifs. The outer right and left sides are finished with small knots. |

Notes |
"About Oriental Rugs: By the strictest definition, Oriental rugs are carpets hand knotted only in Asia. Iran, China, India, Russia, Turkey, Pakistan, Tibet and Nepal are some of the biggest rug exporters. Persian rugs also are Oriental rugs but they are made only in Iran..."
