Description |
Brougham, 1898. Serial #22256 is listed as a Med(ium) Sq. (uare) Arch Brougham. The arch is the cut under section behind the coachman's seat and in front of the body under which the front wheels pass. Brewster often named their vehicle "round arch" or "square arch" depending on the shape. The notes on the specification sheet indicate it was sold to R. Spreckles April 7, 1899. The detail of the monogram indicates the piece is in original condition (quality, wear on paint etc.). Part of the San Mateo County Historical Association's carriage collection. The Brewster & Company specification sheet for this vehicle listed it as a "Medium Square Arch Brougham" #22256. The body and C.P. (carriage parts, i.e. the undercarriage) were rifle green, striped medium broad black. It had #3 Flat D.D. lamps. The trimming (upholstery) was green pebble skins (Morocco or horse hide leather) with leather lace (used for the window lifters) and a plain carpet. The coachman’s seat ("dickey") was English green wool broadcloth. It was fitted with a hand brake and purchased with a driving apron and seat covers. It was sold to Rudolph Spreckles in April 1899. The monogram on the door EJS indicates it was purchased for his wife, Eleanor Joliff Spreckles (1868-1949). |

Carriage stayed in the family, ending up on Runnymede Farm where Adolph Rosekrans remembers playing in it as a boy. In 1939 it was lent or given to the World's Fair and was not seen by the family again until donated to SMCHA in 2020 by History San Jose. 1939 World's Fair sticker was in the back window at that time. |
