Eucalyptus Log Mortar, 1920 - Mortar, Food
Eucalyptus Log Mortar, 1920. Wooden Mortar is 22.5 inch section cut from a solid piece of Eucalyptus log. Wooden log stands on a flat end (as displayed) and has an approximate 7" deep, 15" wide mortar carved into the opposite end. This mortar was used to make mochi. There is also a 7 x 5 knot on the side of log.

Ohlone Mano. Stone mano recovered in Redwood City is large and oval-shaped with one end slightly smaller than the other. One side is has been scraped so that patina is gone and there is a triangular-shaped chip of loss on the opposite side near the small end.

Ohlone Mortar. Stone mortar recovered in Redwood City is round and bowl-shaped. There is a large chip/section of loss where it was hit with heavy equipment when it was discovered in the 1950s.

Ohlone Mortar, pre-1765. Recovered in Redwood City along Cordilleras Creek in Emerald Hills in c. 2000 during a sewer project. Very large granite mortar is egg-shaped with a deep 11" x 7.5" x 5" bowl in the center.

Ohlone Pestle. Stone pestle recovered in Redwood City is fairly small with one blunt end and the other end rough. There are two flat spots near blunt end where stone was probably scraped with something as patina is missing in these sections.

Stone Mortar, pre-1769-1786 - Mortar, Food
Stone Mortar, pre-1769-1786. Stone mortar is oval in shape with a fairly deep oval depression in the top. Back side is higher than the front and the depression goes about half way down the length of the front side. Back has a crack extending from the top edge to about half way down while a similar crack extends down the center front all the way to the back of the base. Stone is probably granite and is mostly brown in color.

Wooden Mochi Pestle, 1920 - Pestle, Food
Wooden Mochi Pestle, 1920. Eucalyptus wood pounder used to make mochi. Handle is approximately 34.5 inches in length and passes through the pounder. This handle also appears to be smooth and stained. The pounder is a cylindrical shape with one flat and one rounded end.
