    Solid wood hand-carved apple butter paddle is made of a single piece of unfinished blonde wood. Spade is rectangular in shape with a flat back, sloped sides and a slightly flared bottom. Cylindrical handle flares into hand-carved blade.

    Bran Pudding, c. 1917-1918. Pen and ink on off-white paper sketch depicts a man in an apron standing over a large wooden bucket, with one foot resting on its edge. With one hand he pours a box of flour into the bucket, and with his other hand he holds a long paddle, from which dough is dripping. A text bubble says "Bran Pudding." Behind the man in the top left corner is a window, through which dark trees and a full moon are visible.

    Butter Mold, n.d. Wooden butter mold made of pine with two brass metal hinges. Made of two L-shaped rectangular sections that are attached with three flat-head screws. These two sections are hinged together with two small brass hinges, also attached with flat-head screws. Used to form butter into rectangular blocks.

  5. Eucalyptus Log Mortar, 1920 - Mortar, Food

    Eucalyptus Log Mortar, 1920. Wooden Mortar is 22.5 inch section cut from a solid piece of Eucalyptus log. Wooden log stands on a flat end (as displayed) and has an approximate 7" deep, 15" wide mortar carved into the opposite end. This mortar was used to make mochi. There is also a 7 x 5 knot on the side of log.

    Ohlone Mano. Stone mano recovered in Redwood City is large and oval-shaped with one end slightly smaller than the other. One side is has been scraped so that patina is gone and there is a triangular-shaped chip of loss on the opposite side near the small end.

    Ohlone Mortar. Stone mortar recovered in Redwood City is round and bowl-shaped. There is a large chip/section of loss where it was hit with heavy equipment when it was discovered in the 1950s.

    Wooden Mochi Pestle, 1920. Eucalyptus wood pounder used to make mochi. Handle is approximately 34.5 inches in length and passes through the pounder. This handle also appears to be smooth and stained. The pounder is a cylindrical shape with one flat and one rounded end.
