Notes |
"ARCHIE WILLIAMS / COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO / INDUCTED MARCH 29, 2018 / Archie Williams began a shining track and field career at San Mateo Junior College (now the College of San Mateo). He eventually transferred to UC Berkeley, where he set the 1936 world record for the 400 meter race at 46.1 seconds in the NCAA Championships. Later that year, Williams found himself, along with fellow U.S. Olympic teammate Jesse Owens, part of a legendary cadre of heralded African-American speedsters who stole the show at Berlin's 1936 Olympic Games. It was here that he earned the U.S. a gold medal in the same 400 meter event." (from Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame award) |
