Description |
Archie Williams Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Plaque, 2018. Plaque is made of wood composite with a natural-looking brown wood finish. On the front is a silver metal plaque with a Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame trophy logo in the top left and black-and-white photo in the top right. Metal is protected by a layer of clear acrylic, and both layers are attached to the wood by four decorative golden metal screws, one in each corner. The back has indentations along the top and left sides to attach hanging or standing apparatus, and there is a silver maker's sticker near the top. Photo is of a young Archie Williams being lifted onto two other men's shoulders. He has very short hair, smiles, and wears a dark blazer and necktie. Text under logo and photo reads "ARCHIE WILLIAMS / COLLEGE OF SAN MATEO / INDUCTED MARCH 29, 2018 / Archie Williams began a shining track and field career at San Mateo Junior College (now the College of San Mateo). He eventually transferred to UC Berkeley, where he set the 1936 world record for the 400 meter race at 46.1 seconds in the NCAA Championships. Later that year, Williams found himself, along with fellow U.S. Olympic teammate Jesse Owens, part of a legendary cadre of heralded African-American speedsters who stole the show at Berlin's 1936 Olympic Games. It was here that he earned the U.S. a gold medal in the same 400 meter event." |
