"Bruce and Byron Van Alstyne became one of San Mateo County's most athletically gifted brother acts in the 1940s and early 1950s. Both were three-sport stars who attended Burlingame High School and Menlo College. Bruce, a year younger than Byron, played football at Stanford as an end and linebacker He participated in the 1951 East-West Shrine Game. He turned down a chance to play pro football. Byron, a guard, went on to play basketball at USC. Both brothers served in the U.S. Navy." [2009.030.180] |
