Description |
Lillie Low Matson Dress, c. 1900. Red and Magenta dress with rhinestone embellishment has a silk slip covered by a full overlay of gauze with long sleeves and a third layer of gauze that covers the bodice down to the hips. The sleeves are 38" long with a 26" slit on the underside. The front of the dress has a rounded neckline that drops 3.5" for the top layer of gauze and 5" for the other two layers underneath. Slits in the top layer of gauze create five 2.5" wide vertical ribbons of fabric edged with silver rhinestones. The rhinestones on the outer ribbons transition from silver into rose, orange, and red colored rhinestones at the shoulders. The bottom of the ribbons hang down and are sewn into a 5.5" wide sash. The sash extends from the front around to the back of the dress where the two ends meet in a cluster of red and magenta gauze petals with three clusters of wire-wrapped rhinestones. The back of the dress has three distinct necklines for the different layers: the silk slip has a deep rounded neckline that drops 7", the second gauze layer is rounded and drops down 4" and the top gauze layer is a deep V-neck that drops down 13". A hem of red gauze is attached to the silk slip underneath. |
