Description |
Nine Patch Quilt, c. 1853. Machine pieced and hand quilted cotton quilt. Pink, red, and white nine patch blocks on point alternate with solid white blocks. These are bordered by white triangles placed just inside the striped border. The quilt has 35 blocks with 6 blocks across the width and 7 blocks down the length. Some of the pale pink fabric has faded to almost white, and five of the nine patch blocks have hand-sewn replacement patch squares. The quilt is bordered with 2.5" wide pink calico strips with a white strip in between. The white strip in the border is patched at top left and bottom right. Reversed blue printed text is visible through the front of the fabric on these patches. The two pink calico stripes in the outer border are composed of dark pink flowers on a light pink ground. The backing is white cotton. |
