Object Name |
Hood, Academic |
Description |
Graduation Hood, 1993. Long fabric hood in an elongated loop. The width of the fabric tapers from about two inches wide at its narrowest point to about two feet wide at its widest. Extending from this widest point are two extensions, one shaped like smaller, rounded tails of a coat and the other like a closed sleeve. The outside is made of a sturdy but satiny black material and a stripe of light blue velvet along one side; the inside is lined in the same satiny fabric in magenta and yellow. The hood is worn with the narrowest point at the front of the wearer's neck and the rest of the garment flowing down the wearer's back, exposing part of the inner lining and giving an impression of an elongated hood. |

Notes |
Academic hoods such as these are generally worn in the United States for graduate degrees (sometimes for bachelor's degrees as well). The colors and shape/length of the hood together signify the institution, degree type, and field of study. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_regalia_in_the_United_States#Hoods 01/17/2018] |
