Provenance |
From the Estate of Robert N. Wheeler (died 2009), retired mechanical and electrical engineer, Ampex Corporation, Redwood City, CA Ampex introduced their Model 200A in 1947, America's first commercially and technically successful audio tape recorder, first delivered to ABC Radio in April, 1948. In 1949 July, the Ampex Model 300 reduced the bulk of the 200 and cut the cost in half ($4000 to $1500), making the 300 suitable for radio stations, recording studios, and a wide variety of applications, including data and instrumentation recording. Ampex was founded by Alexander M. Poniatoff and Tomlinson I. Moseley of Dalmo-Victor in San Carlos, located at Howard and Laurel Streets. Moseley sold out in 1949 and in 1950, the company moved to Redwood City. |
