Description |
Gold Brocade Shift Dress, c. 1960s. Metallic gold and off-white brocade sleeveless fitted shift dress with large chrysanthemum pattern. Hemline and collar are trimmed with gimp-like braid in gold and silver thread. Metallic thread is possibly Lurex. Back of collar has decorative silver multi-rhinestone button, but opens with two snaps and off-white enameled zipper down back. Hem trim was added separately to dress. Shift is handmade, and flat-lined with white muslin and lined with off-white nylon taffeta. |

Costume specialist, Laura Cox, notes that this dress would have been worn with a matching pillbox hat and possibly a matching purse. "Lurex is the registered brand name of The Lurex Company, Ltd. for a type of yarn with a metallic appearance. The yarn is made from synthetic film, onto which a metallic aluminium, silver, or gold layer has been vaporized. "Lurex" may also refer to cloth created with the yarn."
