Gas Mask, c. 1939-1945. Noncombatant M1A2-1-1 gas mask, medium adult. Cylindrical metal tube with text printed on side. Bottom of metal tube has a raised lip and circular vent. Plastic gas mask attached to metal tub. Metal ring and screw attach to metal canister tub. Plastic mask has two clear plastic eye holes. A plastic vent protrudes from side of mask on the outside. No mouthpiece inside mask, only a hole leading to the metal canister tube. Text embossed on metal canister on inside of mask. Five elastic straps extend at back of mask to hold head. Straps have metal buckles to adjust size of straps. All mask pieces are olive green drab in color. |

"MED ADULT" (Embossed in plastic at top of gas mask); "WARNING / THIS GAS MASK IS FOR PROTECTION AGAINST CHEMICAL / WARFARE AGENTS ONLY, DISPERSED IN FREE AIR. / INSTRUCTIONS / The head harness is on the facepiece should be adjusted only / tight enough to insure a gas-tight fit. / To test for leakage, place / hand firmly over the inlet in the bottom of canister and inhale. / The facepiece will draw inward against face if tight. If leakage / occurs around edges of facepiece, adjust head harness. / TO PREVENT EYEPIECES OF MASK FROM FOGGING / 1. Wipe the inner surface of each eyepiece clean with a soft cloth. / 2. Breathe on the cleaned surface and with a piece of soap to / moisten them. / 3. Rub the soap twice across the inside of each eyepiece. / 4. Again breathe on the eyepieces. / 5. Rub the soap evenly over the whole surface with the tip of / the finger. / Handle the mask, especially the eyepieces, with care at all times / so that protection will be furnished when needed. / Store the mask carefully in a cool, dry place."(Printed on metal canister tube); "LOT 19-3-SC" (Printed on back of gas mask); "USMI / LOT 17 3SC" (Embossed on top of metal canister tube on inside of gas mask) |
