Description |
Japanese Lunch Box Set, c. 1930-1970. Black lacquer ware lunch box set consists of two boxes and one lid. Black exterior is decorated with gold etched drawings in a floral motif on sides of boxes and top of lid while underside of lid and interior of boxes is solid red. Lower box (B.1) depicts a matching image of two four-leave clusters on two opposite sides and a vine with four clusters of three leaves each on a fine with wispy flowers at the end on the other two opposite sides. Top box (B.2) depicts an iris on two opposite sides and an open rose (?) with a branch and for sets of three leaves on the other two opposite sides. Lid (B.3) depicts three more stylized flowers on top. Lid and boxes have two strips of wood near opposite ends for fitting snugly inside another box. According to donor, these are "special" lunch boxes probably only used for special occasions or celebratory displays. |
