Description |
Raychem Corporation 9kv Surge Arrester, c. 1996. Third generation surge arrester designed by the Raychem Corporation for the European market to provide lightening protection for electrical utility grids. The surge arrester is produced with novel ceramic and metal chemistry that is covered in a housing of weather and voltage protective polymer. A cylindrical metal shaft with an octagonal shape embossed at each end runs vertically through the center of the surge arrester. "SHN 206" is inscribed inside the octagon on both ends. The polymeric outer coating is colored red and covers the majority of the object except for a small portion at top and bottom. The shape of the surge arrester is symmetrical with various disks staked along the central shaft. Two sets of one large and one small disk appear at center with a wide flat cylinder appearing at top and bottom. The metal bolt at the top is not part of the artifact, but is used for mounting purposes only. |

Excerpt from email written by William Robinson to David Vroom on June 29, 2015 (hard copy in donor file): "Here is a 9kv Surge Arrester designed for the European market. It is of the third generation design and dates from about 1996. It was developed using novel ceramic chemistry in the spirit that Paul Cook and his founding team engendered. The Surge Arrester Systems group was disbanded under leadership following the Paul Cook era." |
