Description |
Demijohn, c. 1930-1950s. Basket-covered wine bottle is cylindrical in shape with a wide body and a long neck that is bulbous near its base, tapering inward toward the 1" bulbous lip at top. Natural fiber basket material consists of .125" vertical warp pieces through which .375" horizontal weft pieces are woven around the body and .25" horizontal weft pieces are woven across the shoulder. Basket material extends just above the shoulder and onto the neck where it has a finished edge. Twisted fiber looped around the neck and attached to side just below shoulder forms a handle for pouring. An additional pieces of braided fiber is strung through the handle for hanging. Bottom is also covered with basket material. |
