Plaque commemorating John Paye being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 28, 1991. Plaque includes image of Paye and a brief biography: "John Paye led Menlo School to two North Coast Section football titles and a state Division II basketball title. / If that weren't enough, Paye returned to Menlo after a successful football and basketball career at Stanford and coached the Knights to three consecutive Division V girls' baskeball titles. / Paye's football stats at Menlo were phenomenal: completing 550 of 936 passes for 7,515 yards and 80 touchdowns. In his senior year, Paye threw for 3,363 yards and 41 touchdowns. Paye was the third California prep quarterback ever to reach the 40 TD mark in a season. / He once threw for eight touchdowns in a game - a state record - and he averaged 305.7 yards a game, another state mark. / In the NCS title game against Upper Lake in 1982, Paye completed 29 of 48 passes for 382 yards. / In basketball, Menlo was going for the state Division II title against Santa Clara of Oxnard, March 20, 1983, at the LA Sports Arena. The Knights were protecting a 2-point lead when Paye was fouled with 15 seconds left. He sank both shots to give Menlo a 53-51 triumph. Paye scored 27 points against Santa Clara, making 10-of-15 shots from the field, 3-of-8 from the foul line." |
