Description |
Star Quilt, circa 1873. Eight pointed cotton star quilt, hand-pieced and hand quilted with machine secured binding (binding is made from folding over backing fabric). The stars use two different calico patterned fabrics with dark red backgrounds. One pattern shows stylistic four pointed black stars with white circles at center and the other shows a pattern of small black rectangles with two white dots. There are alternating blocks of red squares on white ground and solid white blocks. The blocks are set on point. Eight star blocks appear along the length and nine star blocks appear across width of the quilt. Quilting on the white fabric blocks alternate between vertical rows of symmetrical four-petal flowers and rows of four pointed stars with three concentric circles in the center. Small four-petal flowers are quilted along the outer edges. The backing fabric is white and "SUPERFINE / SHEETING" printed in reverse appears in red ink near bottom center. A sleeve for hanging made of polyester is sewn along the top edge on the back (sleeve is not original to the quilt). |
