Description |
Quilt Award Medal, 1860. Copper eighth-inch thick medallion has embossed text around the border of one side that reads, "MASSACHUSETTS CHARITABLE MECHANIC ASSOCIATION / FOUNDED 1795 INCOR. 1806." Inside this is a floral border separated by four small ovals with embossed images depicting an arm holding a mallet, an eagle with a shield, a city and a figure of an archer. Inscribed in the center is text that reads, "AWARD TO / Mrs. F. C. Foster. / FOR / SILK QUILT / AND / TABLE COVER. / EXHIBITION OF / 1860." Embossed on other side is a seated female figure. Her right knee is raised with her right elbow resting on it and her right hand under her chin. Below her left arm, which is resting on her left leg, is a shield with text at top that reads, "BE JUST AND" above an embossed image of a man's muscled arm coming out of a cloud and holding some type of mallet. A ribbon below the shield is embossed with the words, "FEAR NOT." In the background behind the woman's right foot is a steam train on a bridge. The woman's foot rests on an anvil with scattered tools all around. Embossed text beneath imagery reads, "F.N. MITCHELL SC." Medallion is housed in a dark brown small leatherette "book" lined with maroon velvet inside a page that has a round cut-out to hold it. Booklet slides into a paper leatherette box sleeve for storage. |
