Plaque commemorating Ed Kertel being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 23, 1996. Plaque includes image of Steers and a brief biography: "Ed Kertel is a throwback to another time, another era. At Hillsdale High in San Mateo in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he thrived on competition purely for the sake of it. / He bacame a first-team, all-Peninsula Athletic League performer in football, basketball and baseball in his senior year, 1970-71. / According to Hillsdale officials, no one, before or since, has accomplished that feat in a single school year. Kertel later attended the College of San Mateo and San Diego State where he became a football star. / He achieved JC all-American status while at CSM. He played briefly for the San Diego Chargers of the NFL as well." |
