Description |
Gold Rush Era Mural, c. 1935-1943. Paint and canvas mural in the shape of a half circle, with the curved edge forming the top and sides of the piece and the straight edge along the bottom. In the left foreground it depicts three men wearing hats; one of them smokes a cigar and another one holds playing cards. In the right foreground is a Chinese merchant standing behind a table of his wares; he has a scale in front of him and appears to be haggling with a white-bearded client. In the background is a woman in a bonnet, a group of men and one woman standing around a horse, cart, and some barrels, a light gold ship labeled the ARGONAUT with a mermaid figurehead, and another ship sailing in the more distant background. The mural is painted in muted shades of yellow, brown, green, and red. On the back is plaster residue from when the mural was attached to a wall. |
