Description |
Bill Shine Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Plaque, 2018. Plaque is made of wood composite with a natural-looking brown wood finish. On the front is a silver metal plaque with a Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame trophy logo in the top left and black-and-white photo in the top right. Metal is protected by a layer of clear acrylic, and both layers are attached to the wood by four decorative golden metal screws, one in each corner. The back has indentations along the top and left sides to attach hanging or standing apparatus, and there is a silver maker's sticker near the top. Photo is a head and shoulders portrait of a Bill Shine with salt-and-pepper hair and a small mustache. He wears a dark polo (?) shirt with an unknown white logo on it, and faces the camera and smiles. Text under logo and photo reads "BILL SHINE / MENLO SCHOOL / INDUCTED MARCH 29, 2018 / In the annals of high school tennis along the Peninsula, it would be safe to say that Bill Shine's record stands out as a beacon of coaching excellence. In his more than 20 years of tutoring boys' and girls' tennis at Menlo School, those teams captured a combined 43 league championships, 23 Central Coast Section titles and 18 Northern California crowns through 2017. In all, the two teams together generated a staggering combined dual match mark of 988-147. The boys' program was a National Invitational Tournament finalist on seven occasions, winning twice in 2010 and 2012." |

Notes |
"Bill Shine has been the coach of the girls’ and boys’ teams at Menlo School since 1996. During that time, his teams have won a combined 23 Central Coast Section titles and have never lost a league match. No other coach in San Mateo County history has been so successful, and only one coach in all of CCS sports has won more CCS titles. Shine topped the 400th victory mark in 2013. As a junior player, Shine earned a Top 10 ranking every year from 1962 to 1973. He was a four-time MVP at Los Altos High and a two-time CCS singles finalist. Shine was part of the CCS champion doubles team in 1971. In college at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette, Shine was named first-team all-conference in 1975 and 1976. Before coming to Menlo, he coached at Pinewood School and Los Altos High School."
