Description |
The Last Whale by Galen Wolf, c. 1950-1976. Acrylic painting on gray-blue paper, stylized to look almost like stained glass, of a breaching whale. Whale is dark blue, almost black, and leaps vertically out of the water. Surrounding its head are a half dozen white seabirds. The background is light gray-blue with stylized white clouds near the horizon and dark gray clouds in the upper right corner. In the lower left corner of the painting, mostly underwater but with one tentacle extending upward, is a blue and green octopus. On the right side of the painting, in the distance, are the sails of a ship. In the lower right corner is a small school of fish and the artist's signature. Painting is surrounded by textured light blue paper. Frame is plain wood, painted gray, with an inner border of plastic stained to look like vibrant blue wood. On the back is a sticker for Sally Dryer Framing. |

Notes |
Galen Wolf (1889-1976) was a painter who lived in Half Moon Bay from the 1930s until his death. He painted watercolor scenes of local nature and historical sites as well as a "mosaic" series of more whimsical paintings. [http://www.hmbreview.com/arts_and_entertainment/local-painter-wolf-show-opens-in-pacifica/article_2c783936-99d1-11e3-8b1e-001a4bcf887a.html 02/12/2018] "Galen painted the California Missions in the 1930s, worked as a WPA artist in the early 40s, and developed a unique style of painting he called "mosaic" in the 1950s." Later in life, as his eyesight began to fail, his painting style changed; this piece is almost certainly one of his later ones. [https://hmb-odd.org/calendar/49 04/25/2018] |
