Notes |
Costume specialist, Laura Cox has stated that this tablerunner was used for Easter dinners, as daffodils are a motif of spring; May have been a part of a trousseau; may have been imported from or brought back from Japan. "Tradition has it that the daffodil opens on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and dies at Easter which marks the end of Lent." [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_in_culture#Eastern_cultures] "Ceremonial placing and removal of the sanap became an elaborate ritual for late medieval English royalty, with favoured servants or even courtiers having the honour of "[with]drawing the sanap", usually embroidered, trimmed with lace etc. " [http://www.oldandinteresting.com/medieval-tablecloths.aspx] |
