Description |
Breaking Cart, c. 1910. Cart has a wooden frame that has been painted red. Seat and interior are painted black. Cart has a red upholstered removable cushion. There are brackets for two backrest cushions but only one, with black leather upholstery, is present. This is a heavy cart with a wide seat and substantial shafts used for training and exercising horses. The seat is mounted on elliptical springs. It has a hinged seat back and a slatted rear platform. The shafts between which a single horse would fit are as heavy as individual poles used with a pair of horses. Maker: Unknown, American (possibly homemade). Notes |
Notes: 6/3/09 Erik Jensen, Member of National Carriage Association: easy to get in and out of; very heavy; used to train a horse to use carts [http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/breaking%20cart] Breaking cart: a long-shafted 2-wheeled cart for breaking horses to single harness 8/2021 Carriage Consultant Merri Ferrell: This vehicle is unlike any I have seen. I understand its purpose; its overall heaviness indicates it was used to train large horses. It has a very wide seat. The cushion on it obviously does not fit and is not likely part of it. It has been repainted at a later date. Its lazy back has been removed and should be reattached. This may be a homemade vehicle with little importance, or something highly specific to the area or the Holbrook-Palmer family estate operations. Further research is required. |
