Description |
Sun Star Quilt, 1858. Cotton hand pieced and appliquéd blue and white sun star quilt. Sun star pattern is a Mariners Compass variation. The quilt is comprised of nine blocks in rows of 3 x 3 with pattern pieces in blue calico against a white ground. Individual blocks are approx. 23" square and each has a round center blue sunburst design bordered by four white pieces that comprise the larger square. A feather motif with diagonal grid is quilted in the blocks and a square grid pattern is quilted over the flying geese zig-zag border design. The binding is the same blue calico fabric used throughout and backing is white cotton. Faded handwritten black ink signature on back bottom left corner reads, "Dorothea Best / 1858." |
