c. 1926-1929 residential mailbox from Everett & Maybelle Schumacher’s home on Warren Road in San Mateo Park in San Mateo, CA. Vertical iron and steel metal mailbox is flat on the back and cylindrical on the front; top is deeper than the bottom. Front is solid iron while back is comprised of a steel plate inserted into grooves on the back. There are two lids. Top lid is shaped like a narrow rectangle and lifts to reveal a slot for postal carrier to insert mail. Top lid is affixed to flat top of bottom lid, which is larger and would be used by recipient to retrieve mail. Front bottom of larger lid has a vertical loop opening that surrounds perpendicular loop affixed to box through which a padlock could be used. Between latch and bottom of mailbox is a small one inch square window with a "X" inside. Mailbox affixes to wall via one hole at bottom and three at top just beneath top lid. |
