Gown, Baptismal |
Description |
Baby's Christening Gown, c. 1870-1920. Long dress made of a semi-sheer white woven fabric. Dress has short sleeves with two layers of lacy ruffles at the edges, and a square neckline with additional lace at the hem. At the chest is a trapezoidal panel where the fabric has been folded over itself and stitched in place to create the appearance of horizontal stripes. This panel is framed on either side by a continuation of the lace ruffle from the sleeves. Around the waist is a ribbon with a white embroidered floral vine design. Near the bottom hem are more of these narrow folded stripes and, between them, two tiny parallel embroidered vines. There is a long vertical slit in back, fastened closed only by string ties at the back of the neck. |
