He was a slashing runner who starred in high school, college and the professional ranks. After graduating from Jefferson, he attended St Mary's College where he was a standout for the Gaels in classic battles with Fordham University. His college feats gained him a berth on the East-West Shrine football team in 1942. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Compagno became a starting fullback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played offense and defense for the Steelers from 1945 to 1949. In one memorable game in 1947, he was one of a trio of Steelers to score a touchdown in a period of 108 seconds against the New York Giants. He retired from professional football in 1950 and assisted with high school sports as an official until his death at the age of 50." |
