Description |
Plaque commemorating Alfred "Red" Morton being inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 23, 1996. Plaque includes image of Morton and a brief biography: "Alfred "Red" Morton, in many ways, can be considered the father of athletics in Redwood City. Beginning in 1937 and continuing for 34 years, he guided that community's recreation department, pushing for sporting facilities and programs for all its residents. / That includes the creation of the spacious Community Park complex. He also had a major interest in softball. / In the 1950s, he bacame the Northern California commissioner of the Amateur Softball Association and served as the ASA Pacific Area president beginning in 1956. Morton, who died in 1971, is a member of the ASA Hall of Fame. / The Red Morton Community Center in Redwood City is named in his honor." |
