Description |
Wood and acrylic plaque commemorating Walt Gilliam of San Mateo High School who was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on June 21, 2007. Plaque includes image of Gilliam and a brief biography: "He was called "The Gentle Giant." And for good reason. Walt Gilliam, whose lanky 6-6 frame towered over most rivals on the golf course, was a kind, considerate fellow who became, arguably, San Mateo County's first great golfer in the 1930's. As an amateur, he captured tournaments in San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and on the Peninsula. He came within an eyelash of qualifying for the U.S. Open in 1955. In 1965, he was named Amateur of the Year. He was inducted into the Northern California Golf Hall of Fame in 2005." |
