Description |
Armoire, c.1860-1885. Stained walnut armoire has a half circle pediment, a large mirrored door and a single drawer at the bottom. Pediment has a cartouche with an iris, an egg and scrolls in the middle, and an upside-down shell finial. Pediment extends out horizontally and has scrolled and trumpet flower shaped outer ends. Mirror is framed and has right-angled bottom corners and rounded top corners with an angular upper edge. At top corners of mirror are two decorative wooden pieces shaped like shields and feathers. To proper right of mirror is a key hole; only upper arc of lock plate is left. On sides, upper third of armoire has carved decorative pillars with a spike-motif scrollwork on top and a heart leaf pendant on bottom. Drawer has two pateras on outer sides and, in the middle, a round metal key plate resting on a rectangular wooden plaque with shell motif on ends. Interior walls of armoire are finished with burred light wood (possibly maple or birch) veneer. Shelves are of dark wood and two of them are currently covered with gold marbleized shelf paper. At sides in center at top and bottom are metal rods (4); all but one is covered with a brass finial with four holes for inserting a tool to tight them. Original rod for hanging clothes is missing and four shelves had been added. Armoire has a silver brass skeleton key with a clover shape head and a red tassel which was added at a later date. |
