Copper Spike from the Shipwreck Ventura, 1875 |
Object Name |
Spike |
Description |
Copper Spike from the Shipwreck Ventura, 1875. Copper spike shaped like a letter J. At the straight end (the top of the J) is a small knob or bulb shaped like a rounded square. Traveling down the J, the metal starts out with this same rounded square shape but gradually becomes narrower and more rounded closer to the hook. The hook itself starts about three-quarters of the way down the spike and curves only gently. It flattens out somewhat and tapers to a dull point. |

Notes |
The Ventura, a commercial and passenger steamship owned by the Goodall, Nelson, and Perkins Steamship Company, wrecked on April 20th 1875 when it hit a rock and ran aground at Point Sur. The ship was built in 1865 for the US Navy and originally named the USS Resaca; it was sold to the GN&P Co. in 1873 and was then renamed and rebuilt for commercial service.
