Description |
Baby's Christening Gown, c. 1870-1920. Long white gown made of semi-sheer woven fabric, fitted at the shoulders and loose everywhere else. Collar has a border of simple lace; chest/shoulder area has the fabric stitched in very narrow overlapping strips to look like vertical stripes; underneath this section is a horizontal ribbon of white lace-style embroidery. Sleeves are long and end in more overlapping stripes and lace. Near the bottom hem of the dress are two more layers of the overlapping stripes, this timen running horizontally around the dress. The back has a lng vertical split with two pearl or imitation pearl buttons to fasten it closed. |

Joseph Henry Poett Howard (b. 1872) was the fourth and youngest child of Agnes Poett Howard and her second husband George Henry Howard, both influential in San Mateo County's early development and history. His parents had built El Cerrito, a large home near present-day Coyote Point. He married his cousin Marion Poett in 1894 and their son Joseph Henry Poett Howard Jr. was born in 1875. He attended Harvard University 1890-93 and traveled in Europe 1907-10. As of 1919 he was retired and lived in San Mateo County.
