Wood and acrylic plaque commemorating Dick Vermeil of Hillsdale High School who was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame on May 16, 1990. Plaque includes image of Vermeil and a brief biography: "Dick Vermeil started his illustrious coaching career in 1961 with an undefeated, nine-victory football season at Hillsdale High School. / After two more seasons at Hillsdale, Vermeil moved on to coach at the College of San Mateo, Napa College, Stanford University, UCLA, the Los Angeles Rams, and finally the Philadelphia Eagles. His most prominent successes occurred at UCLA and with the Eagles. / In the 1974-75 seasons at UCLA, Vermeil posted a 15-5-3 record. In the 1975 Rose Bowl, Vermeil's Bruins upset Ohio State 23-10 although UCLA had lost to Woody Hayes' team by 21 points in the regular season. / From UCLA, the Eagles called and within three years they were in the NFL playoffs. The Eagles' winning ways continued, and Vermeil took the 1980 club to the Super Bowl where they lost to the Raiders, 27-10. / He retired after the strike-torn 1982 season and turned to broadcasting as a career." |
