Notes |
"March 29, 1977 San Mateo Historical Museum 1700 West Hillsdale Boulevard San Mateo, California 94402 Attention: Mr. Garcia Gentlemen: I am sending you these pictures of my horses that I have used with the phaeton and the gig. The black pair, marked "Juanita" and "Wanda" were never beaten in a Ladies Phaeton Class. During the terrible fire at the Oakland Show Juanita was burned to death. The other mare only lasted a short time after, and she really died of grief for her partner. After that pair I had the pair, "Princess Conaught" and "Duchess of Warwick", however, they never did equal the black pair. At the Devon Horse Show I bought the bay pair, "Seaton Wake Robin" and "Seaton Mikado", from the Moore's, who were one of the most prominent exhibitors of hackney horses. Their farm was called Seaton Farm and they raised these two bay hackneys. They were showing what they thought was their best pair, but I bought this younger pair and after getting them they never were defeated in the Ladies Phaeton Class, in fact, they beat the Moore's own pair. The picture with the horse gig shows how a horse gig can be used with a tandem. That picture was taken in the field at Why Worry Farm in Woodside. I am also sending another picture showing the phaeton with a single hitch. … Sincerely yours, Mrs. William P. Roth" [Letter sent from donor] |
