Plaque includes image of Roth and a brief biography: "At Menlo-Atherton High School in the mid-60's, swimmer Dick Roth was known as "King Richard," and he left everyone surging in his wake. As a senior, he led MA to the national prep swim title. / While still at MA, Roth also led the water polo team which lost only one game - a game played while Roth was undertaking another assignment. / Roth was in Tokyo as a member of the 1964 United States Olympic swim team. Despite an attack of appendicitis, the 17-year-old earned an Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley in world-record time (4:45.4) that wouldn't be touched for another four years. / In 1967, as a Stanford University sophomore, Roth won the 200 and 400-meter individual medley races at the NCAA national championship meet, and Stanford came away with the team title. / By the time he retired from swimming a year later, he'd won 12 national titles, set seven American records and won the Olympic gold in world-record time."
