Aircraft Crash & Rescue Fire Dept. U.S. Air Force Badge, c. 1947-1960. Silver metal badge; the central shape is a circle; above it is an ornate eagle, blank banner, and background swirls that together make a sort of dome shape, and below it is a smaller, subtly pointed shape with a swirly pattern on it. In the circle's center is a relief logo of a ladder intersecting with what looks like swords and fire hydrants. Around this logo is stamped "AIRCRAFT CRASH & RESCUE" and "FIRE DEPT. U.S. A.F." in black text. |

The Air Force became a separate branch of the military in 1947. Crash and rescue firefighters in the air force and marines "use firefighting equipment and extinguishing materials to rescue victims involved in aircraft crashes and to fight fires. Typical duties include operating, servicing, inspecting and testing aircraft rescue and firefighting systems, including rescue equipment as well as instructing personnel in the techniques and procedures rescue and firefighting."
