In the center, partially obscured by trees on either side, is a single-arched bridge with a low railing over a shallow river. In the foreground, large rocks line the riverbanks. A girl or young woman holding a straw hat sits on one of the largest rocks near the photograph's bottom left corner. In the background are more trees and the crest of a distant hill. On the back is stamped "H16" in blue. |

The Yosemite Grant, a federal bill that protected the Yosemite area from commercial interests and established it as a California State Park, was passed in 1864. The area became a National Park in 1890. Yosemite Valley, which is only a small piece of the park but contains most of the park's famous sights, attracts 4-5 million visitors annually.
