View of Pipe across the Marsh on Trestle Work near San Bruno Toll Road, 1888. Sepia photograph shows marshland bordering the San Francisco Bay. A pipe runs across the lowest part of the marsh, approximately in the middle of the photograph. The left foreground shows a ditch leading down to meet the pipe, with at least a dozen people standing in or near the ditch. On the other side of the marsh, the pipe meets taller and drier hills in the background. Telephone or electrical poles are placed beside the ditch and pipe at intervals. Two sets of labeled parallel lines are drawn across the waters of the bay on the left; the dark blue set is labeled "PRESENT FREEWAY 1960t" and the pink set is labeled "PRESENT BAYSHORE HIGHWAY." More pink pen above the photograph reads "WHAT IS NOW BRISBANE 1888" and black pen below the photo reads "View of Pipes across the Marsh on Trestle Work" and "near San Bruno Toll Road." |

"Crystal Springs Dam is a gravity dam constructed across the San Mateo Creek, impounding water to form the Lower Crystal Springs Reservoir in San Mateo County, California. It was among the first concrete gravity dams built in the western United States." It was completed in 1888.
