Notes |
"John C. Boyle, of Atherton, is retiring October 1 from his past as airport manager for Pan American Airways at San Francisco, after a 31-year career with the company. He will be succeeded by Herbert L. Thomas, Jr., airport manager for Pan Am at Miami. Boyle joined Pan Am in 1936 at Alameda when Colonel Clarence N. Young, now retired and living in Palo Alto, was directing the pioneering flights of the China Clipper flying boats across the Pacific. Boyle came to Pan Am after a period of aeronautics study with the Boeing Company. Before that he had been a fighter pilot with the Navy. His career in transportation stretches back to sailing ship rigger in Alaskan waters... During his career with Pan Am, Boyle helped open Orient routes to Hong Kong and Macao as operations manager for China. He served on Midway Island and at Honolulu before becoming maintenance super intendent at San Francisco. He has held his present post since 1965."
