Charles V. Litton, Sr. was an engineer and inventor who designed and built the first practical glass blowing lathe, revolutionizing the vacuum tube industry in 1924. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi with a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering from Stanford in 1925. In 1932 he founded Litton Engineering Laboratories in Redwood City. During World War II, he moved to San Carlos and expanded to help in the war effort in the production of microwave tubes used in communications and radar equipment. He was awarded the Presidential Certificate of Merit for the work he had done. After the war, Litton Industries was founded. The company grew and was sold in 1953. Litton Engineering, now run by Litton's sons, is located in Grass Valley. Litton's accomplishments include 66 patents held on various high-tech innovations. (Joan Levy/2006) |
