"Ann Kiyomura, a graduate of Aragon High School in San Mateo, started out her tennis career by dominating age-group singles competition. But it would be in doubles that she would make her most lasting mark. / Kiyomura won 14 U.S. national singles and doubles titles and captured the 1973 junior Wimbledon singles crown, defeating Martina Navratilova of Czechoslovakia. In a 13-year professional career, she won the National Indoor doubles title, the Japan Open, a number of Avon and Virginia Slims tournaments and represented the U.S. in Wightman Cup play. In 1975, she teamed with Kazuko Sawamatsu of Japan to win the Wimbledon doubles crown. / She also starred for the Oakland-based Golden Gaters and two other franchises in the World Team Tennis league. She twice won the Bridgestone Doubles championship with Sue Barker and Pam Shriver before retiring in 1985. Kiyomura turned pro when she was 17 years old." [2009.030.102] |
