"Ben Eastman took the California track and field world by storm in the late 1920s and early 1930s. While competing for Burlingame High School, the bespectacled Eastman dominated Bay Area sprinting events, setting standard after standard at the prep level. Eastman then went on to attend nearby Stanford University. It was there that Eastman, who was nicknamed "Blazin' Ben" by the area's track and field pundits, blossomed into a world-class runner. His speed would propel him all the way to the 1932 Olympic Games. He won a silver medal in the Los Angleles Games in the 400-meter run. He was the world record-holder in the 440-yard run, with a clocking of 46.4 at Stanford. As a freshman at the school, he cruised the 440 in 48.4, a frosh mark that stood until 1965. Although the 440 or 400, was Eastman's forte, he ran longer races as well. He established Stanford records in the 600, 800 and 1,000 under the guidance of his coach, Dink Templeton." [2009.030.058] |
