PHYLLIS CANGEMI is the founder (1983) and executive director of Whole Access, a nonprofit organization that works to increase outdoor recreation and nature opportunities for all people- including those with disabilities. Whole Access conducts workshops and provides technical consulting to park managers, designers and planners to help them create facilities and programs that are accessible to all. Ms. Cangemi has presented at numerous regional, nation and international park and trail conferences, including February 1992 at the Fourth World Congress on National parks and Protected Areas in Caracas, Venezuela. (The World Congress was the prelude to the June 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) She received training on state and federal access regulations from the California Department of Rehabilitation and Office of the State Parks Accessibility Task Force. She has been recognized for her work by the California Department of Rehabilitation, Point Reyes National Seashore, and through receipt of the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award (1986). Ms. Cangemi and her organization, Whole Access, have been featured in articles in Sierra (1988) and National Geographic (1990) magazines, and she has published articles on access in several national and international publications. |
