Barron, Brett |
Notes |
[2014 Sports Hall of Fame Plaque] "Even as a kid in Daly City, Brett Barron didn't back down. That stood him in good stead as he pursued a judo career. At the tender age of seven, he began to learn to learn the fine points of the sport at the Cahill Judo Academy. By the 1970s, he had established himself as one of the country's raising judo stars. He secured a bronze medal for the U.S. in his weight class in the 1979 Pan American Games and a gold in the same games four years later. Dislocating his thumb in the 3rd round against the Olympic favorite prevented him from advancing to the later rounds for a potential bronze medal in the 1984 Olympic Games. He was a member of three World Championship teams, among a host of other accomplishments. He retired from competition in 1988, but returned to coach the U.S. Olympic Team in 2004." |
